Political Views of Heraclitus

The article examines the question of Heraclitus' political preferences. It has been established that Heraclitus' criticism was directed at all the main types of state structure in Ancient Greece in the 6th–5th centuries BC. Heraclitus speaks negatively about tyranny, oligarchy, and radical democracy. Heraclitus' critical attitude toward moderate democracy and aristocracy of the spirit is shown. The article defends the version that Heraclitus was a supporter of monarchy. The following arguments support this version. First, Heraclitus's royal origin. Second, Heraclitus's emphasis on the idea of the superiority of one over all. Third, the correspondence between Heraclitus's monarchical views and certain provisions of his cosmology and theology. Fourth, Heraclitus's commitment to the values most characteristic of a monarchical system.
